Have you ever wondered who discovered the Silk Road in Ancient China? If you don’t I’ll tell you, his name was Zhang Qian. I’ll tell you about his life, what he did to become famous, and the effects it had on Ancient China.
First I’ll tell you about the life of Zhang Qian. He was born in the year 195 B.C during the Han Dynasty in present day Hanzhong, Shaanxi at the boarder of northeastern Sichuan. He died in the year 114 B.C. He was an imperial envoy during the Han Dynasty. In 138 B.C. the Han court took Zhang Qian to the Western Regions which was also the time when the Xiongnu tribes were in control of that area. Zhang Qian was accompanied by a person who went by the name of Gunfu who was a Xiaongnu guide but is now a slave controlled by the Tangyi family.
Next I’ll tell you what Zhang Qian did to become famous. The reason Zhang Qian became so famous is he was the founder of the Silk Road. The way he found the Silk Road was the Han court sent Zhang Qian and a slave named Gunfu to the Western Regions to form a military alliance with the Greater Yuezhi. During his trip he was captured by Xiangnu tribe and was held captive for ten years. While he was there he married a Xiangnu woman and earned the trust of Xiangnu leader. When Zhang Qian finally made it to the Yuezhi lands he found out they wanted war against the Xiangnu’s. Zhang spent at least a year in their territory understanding their culture, lifestyle, and economy. When he returned back to China he came back with reliable information about Central Asia. Unfortunately he was not able to form a military alliance but he did find the Silk Road by connecting all the routes he went through during his Journey.
Finally I’ll tell you the pros and cons it had on Ancient China. The pros were the Chinese were now able to trade farther distances which went around the Turkistan Desert, over the High Pamir Mountains, and across the Iranian plateau to Mesopotamia and the Eastern Mediterranean. Now I will tell you the cons of the Silk Road. People had to travel really far to trade. They were not able to go through a whole journey, so what they did was one person would go in one caravan and gave their goods to another person in a caravan to continue the trade. They kept doing this because it was a really good idea so a person would not die of thirst or hunger. Yes they did take food and water with them but it will not last for the trip back home.
So Zhang Qian was a really famous person back the in Ancient China. His life, how he became famous, and the pros and cons the Silk Road had on Ancient China are all intrusting, so why don’t you pick a person from the past and write a research report about them hey maybe you’ll learn a thing or two about them>
